Gabby Agbonlahor says it’s ‘ridiculous’ who Manchester United want to bring in now

The Manchester United rumour mill has thrown up some quite incredible stories over the years.

Given the instability of the club and the lack of success on the field of play, it has resulted in more chaos and stories being leaked than ever before.

Even now, with Erik ten Hag in the dugout, there are still question marks over his Manchester United future.

That FA Cup win over Liverpool was huge, as well as the team still being in with a chance of playing Champions League football next season.

You feel all of this is incredibly important in what happens to ten Hag going forward.

But when Gabby Agbonlahor was told that Manchester United are considering bringing in Wolves boss Gary O’Neil to be part of their coaching staff, he was left perplexed.

The former Aston Villa striker suggested that it’s ‘insulting’ to the 40-year-old himself and how these stories coming out are ‘a bit ridiculous now’, as he told talkSPORT (28/03/24 at 6:25 am).

Gary O’Neil from Wolves to Manchester United

“I think he will be insulted,” said Agbonlahor. “If he is going into training today and he sees this story and he will say ‘so, I am going to leave a job where I have been outstanding this season and go and be a coach?!’

“Managers want to be managers. They don’t want to be coaches. They only want to be a coach if they are struggling or are out-of-work.

“Some of these stories coming out are a bit ridiculous now.”

Manchester United and Wolves in the Premier League

Whilst those at Old Trafford feel they can still secure Champions League football, they still have to look over their shoulders.

Ninth-placed Wolves are six points behind ten Hag and his players. They will feel they still have a chance of finishing in the top six if they return from the international break and end the season strong.

Either way, why would a manager, who is possibly going to finish in Europe, decide to be part of a coaching team at Manchester United?

This isn’t the Sir Alex Ferguson era anymore. Man United being an elite team has long gone.
